Food Addiction: Does It Exist?

Do we need to change the way we treat obesity if, in some cases, it is caused by addiction?

It is natural for us to think about addiction in terms of drugs, alcohol, and gambling. While rarely unheard of, many people never even try them. Is it possible that eating could also be addictive? Excessive consumption of drugs, alcohol, and gambling can cause both physical and psychological harm. The same can be said for excessive eating. We might need to rethink the idea of overeating if we believe alarming predictions regarding obesity rates.

There is a worldwide debate over whether overeating exploits the same biological mechanisms as drug and alcohol addiction. How addictive are certain foods if there is a food addiction? The latest research underpinning the scientific basis for overeating is explored in this episode with Sally Marlow, a researcher at London’s Institute of Psychiatry.

The EU research project NeuroFAST began coordinating data on the relationship between overeating and addiction in 2012. The goal is to reach consensus on the clinical classification of overeating, which might lead to major changes in treatment, policy, and attitudes.

Many people would consider obesity a self-inflicted disease. In spite of this, modern science has shown that an individual’s choices are influenced by a wide range of biological and environmental factors: genes, brain chemistry, and family history, among others. Are these mechanisms also involved in overeating?
